Washington, D.C. – Emily Gabriella Sommer, 32, from the District of Columbia, has pleaded guilty to three counts of assaulting a government official, in a shocking case that saw her spit on former U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr. and two Deputy United States Marshals. The incident unfolded on May 8, 2025, when Sommer verbally attacked Martin during an interview outside the U.S. Attorney’s Office, culminating in the assault. She was also arrested on May 22 for additional assaults against law enforcement officers.
According to court documents, Sommer approached Martin during his on-camera interview and called him names before spitting on his shoulder. The defendant then walked away from the scene, shouting obscenities. Law enforcement identified an online account linked to Sommer that was active during the incident, posting comments related to the assault.
During her May 22 arrest, Sommer spat on one Deputy U.S. Marshal and kicked another, adding to the charges against her. The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jacob Green and Joshua Gold. Sentencing has been scheduled for October 10, 2025.
U.S. Pardon Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr., who also serves as Director of the Weaponization Working Group for the Department of Justice, commended U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro and her team for their professional handling of the case. ‘I want to congratulate U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro, and her trial prosecutors Josh Gold and Jake Green, for the professional and respectful manner they handled this case and bringing it to a successful conclusion,’ Martin said.
The defendant’s actions have sparked public outrage, with many calling for swift justice. As the grim details of the case come to light, the nation waits to see what sentence Sommer will face for her heinous behavior.
