Erie Convenience Store Owner Ordered to Pay Restitution for Food Stamp Fraud
A 39-year-old Erie resident, James Hunter, Jr., has been sentenced to 30 months probation and ordered to pay $49,617 in restitution after being convicted of theft of government property. Hunter, the owner and operator of Melo’s Stop N Shops in Erie, was found guilty of accepting food stamps and WIC checks for cash or ineligible items such as cigarettes from July 2012 to June 2015.
The investigation, which led to Hunter’s successful prosecution, was a collaborative effort between the United States Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General, Homeland Security Investigations, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Erie Bureau of Police.
According to information presented to the court, Hunter’s actions resulted in a significant loss for the government, highlighting the importance of continued vigilance in preventing food stamp fraud.
Assistant United States Attorney Christian A. Trabold prosecuted this case on behalf of the government, bringing to justice a perpetrator of a serious white-collar crime.
The case serves as a reminder that food stamp fraud will not be tolerated, and those found guilty will face consequences.
United States Attorney Scott W. Brady commended the agencies involved in the investigation, stating that their efforts were instrumental in bringing Hunter to justice.
The sentence handed down by United States District Judge David S. Cercone reflects the severity of Hunter’s crimes, and it is hoped that it will serve as a deterrent to others who may be tempted to engage in similar behavior.
