A Steubenville man has been charged with possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number in Brooke County, West Virginia.
Eugene Charles Williams, 35, was indicted on one count of ‘Unlawful Possession of a Firearm’ and one count of ‘Obliterated Serial Number.’
The charges stem from an incident in January 2022, when Williams allegedly had a 9mm handgun with an obliterated serial number.
Williams is prohibited from having firearms due to a previous felony conviction.
He faces up to 10 years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000 for the firearms charge, and up to five years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000 for the obliterated serial number charge.
Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer T. Conklin is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government, with the Bureau of Tobacco, Alcohol, Firearms and Explosives conducting the investigation.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Williams is currently facing the charges, and a trial date has not been set.
