Antonio Tillmon, Heroin Trafficking, NC 2023

WASHINGTON – A jury has delivered a guilty verdict to Antonio Tillmon, 33, a former officer with the Windsor City Police Department, for his central role in a large-scale drug trafficking operation. The Eastern District of North Carolina court found Tillmon guilty on multiple counts including drug conspiracy, attempted possession with intent to distribute, firearm conspiracy, firearm charges, and federal programs bribery. This isn’t just a bad cop; it’s a betrayal of the badge and a stain on the entire system.

The Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced the conviction, stemming from a deep-dive undercover investigation into widespread corruption within law enforcement in Northampton County, North Carolina. The probe revealed a pattern of officers willing to turn a blind eye – and a deaf ear – for the right price. This case proves that the rot goes deep.

Evidence presented at trial showed Tillmon accepted $6,500 from undercover FBI agents posing as drug traffickers. In return, he transported a staggering 30 kilograms of heroin from North Carolina to Maryland over three separate occasions between August 2014 and April 2015. Each time, Tillmon brazenly carried his law enforcement badge and a firearm, using his position to shield the illegal shipment. He even prepared falsified documentation to evade potential drug interdiction stops.

The greed didn’t stop there. Tillmon agreed to a fourth drug transport, showing up armed with a dangerous arsenal – five firearms, including an assault rifle, complete with three magazines of ammunition. This wasn’t just about money; it was about escalating firepower in a criminal enterprise. He was willing to arm a drug operation, actively contributing to the violence that plagues our streets.

Tillmon wasn’t working alone. Fourteen other individuals, including 13 current or former law enforcement and correctional officers, have been charged in connection with the drug and firearm conspiracies, all facing bribery charges. They’ve all pleaded guilty and await sentencing later this year. Tillmon, however, was the only defendant to take the case to trial – and lost. He’ll be sentenced on August 8, 2017, by Senior U.S. District Judge Malcom J. Howard.

The prosecution was led by Trial Attorneys Lauren Bell and Molly Gaston of the Criminal Division’s Public Integrity Section, alongside Assistant U.S. Attorney Toby Lathan of the Eastern District of North Carolina. The FBI’s Charlotte Division, Raleigh Resident Agency, conducted the investigation. This conviction sends a message – but will it be enough to clean up the mess in Northampton County? The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story.
