Justin Grant Crain, 38, of El Dorado, Arkansas, is headed to federal prison for over 12 years after being convicted on one count of knowing receipt of child pornography. The former Union County Sheriff’s Deputy was sentenced to 148 months behind bars, followed by five years of supervised release, in a case that exposed a pattern of hidden criminal behavior behind a badge.
The unraveling began in April 2016, when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children flagged images of child exploitation uploaded to a cloud storage account linked to a phone number tied to Crain. A joint investigation by the Arkansas State Police and the Department of Homeland Security quickly zeroed in on Crain, then serving as a law enforcement officer sworn to protect the public.
Authorities executed a federal search warrant on Crain’s cell phone while he was on duty, uncovering more than fifty images of child pornography. The discovery led to his immediate arrest on June 3, 2016, on federal charges including Accessing the Internet with the Intent to View Child Pornography and Receipt of Child Pornography. His career in law enforcement ended with his termination from the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
A second federal search, conducted at Crain’s home by the Arkansas State Police and the United States Secret Service, uncovered approximately 850 additional illegal images stored on personal electronic devices. The sheer volume and nature of the material painted a damning picture of systematic abuse and exploitation.
Crain, once trusted to uphold the law, was indicted by a federal grand jury in the Western District of Arkansas in June 2016. He later pleaded guilty to the charge of knowing receipt of child pornography in March 2017. U.S. District Judge Susan O. Hickey presided over the sentencing hearing in El Dorado, where justice was finally delivered.
The case was a collaborative takedown involving the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Arkansas State Police Cybercrimes Unit, Homeland Security, the U.S. Secret Service, the Union County Sheriff’s Office, and the Arkansas Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wulff prosecuted the case for the United States, ensuring Crain would face the full weight of federal law.
