Ex-Maricopa County Lawyer Gets 18 Months for Meth Trafficking

A former Maricopa County lawyer has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for attempting to possess methamphetamine.

33-year-old Sally Joyce Nyemba, of Phoenix, was sentenced on Monday to 18 months in prison by United States District Judge Susan M. Brnovich after pleading guilty to Attempted Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine on August 31, 2023.

Nyemba, a former Deputy Public Defender, was arrested in 2020 after negotiating the purchase of two pounds of methamphetamine for $3,600 and 4,000 M30 pills for $10,000 from an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent.

The arrest occurred on May 12, 2020, at a meeting in Phoenix where Nyemba provided the agent with $3,600 for the drugs. Agents searched Nyemba’s vehicle and seized approximately $14,158 in U.S. currency.

This effort is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, which identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level criminal organizations threatening the United States.

The Drug Enforcement Administration East Valley Drug Enforcement Task Force conducted the investigation in this case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, Phoenix, handled the prosecution.

Nyemba’s case number is CR-21-01094-PHX-SMB, and release number is 2024-055_Nyemba.
