GRIM CITY REPORTS: A brazen attempt to rob an Independence restaurant was thwarted by the quick thinking of employees, who tackled a would-be bandit wielding a fake gun. Bryan C. Byers, 23, from Kansas City, Mo., faced federal sentencing today for his daring scheme.
Bryans’ sentence: six years and six months in federal prison without parole. The U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark handed down the stiff penalty after Byers pleaded guilty to one count of robbery on July 13, 2022.
The crime scene unfolded at Lucky Buffet on February 21, 2022. Byers approached two employees with what seemed like a Glock handgun. However, upon closer inspection, it was revealed that the lower portion of the gun was an airsoft pistol and not capable of firing live rounds.
Byers threatened the workers with death if they didn’t hand over cash from the register. But the employees stood their ground, grabbing Byers’ ‘weapon’ and engaging in a physical struggle. The feisty fight ensued as restaurant staff hurled food at Byers and wielded chairs to subdue him until police arrived.
Byers was taken to the hospital for treatment after officers arrived on scene. They discovered approximately $873 scattered around the restaurant. Assistant U.S. Attorney David A. Barnes prosecuted this case, which was investigated by the Independence Police Department and ATF.
This incident is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN brings together stakeholders to identify and address crime problems within communities, focusing on violent offenders while partnering with local prevention and reentry programs for long-term crime reduction.
