Federal Inmate Gets 18 Months for Assault on Guard
A federal inmate was sentenced to an additional 18 months in prison for assaulting a federal prison guard, as part of a violent outburst in a Minnesota correctional facility.
Charles Marquis Mitchell, 28, who is currently serving a sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Sandstone, Minnesota, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson.
According to court documents, on May 29, 2020, Mitchell ingested a synthetic drug and began shouting and acting erratically. He then struck one inmate with a closed fist and shoved another inmate into a wall. When prison guards ordered Mitchell to lay on the ground, he refused and lunged towards them, striking one guard in the head and face with a closed fist.
Acting U.S. Attorney W. Anders Folk for the District of Minnesota announced the sentence, which will run consecutively to Mitchell’s current sentence. The case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lindsey E. Middlecamp.
Mitchell’s actions were a clear disregard for the safety of both his fellow inmates and the corrections officers who are tasked with maintaining order in the facility.
The sentence handed down in this case serves as a reminder that violent behavior will not be tolerated in our correctional facilities, and those who engage in such behavior will be held accountable.
As the investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate, the U.S. Attorney’s Office will work tirelessly to ensure that those who commit violent crimes are brought to justice and held accountable for their actions.
