On June 25, 2026, at 6:45 p.m., Samuel Fapohunda, a 27-year-old previously convicted felon from Maryland, was busted by officers on patrol in the 1800 block of 18th Street SE in DC. Fapohunda was found with a loaded Glock 19 pistol, marijuana, and codeine-based cough syrup in his vehicle. The traffic stop was initiated due to an illegally-tinted window, and officers smelled marijuana, leading to the discovery of the firearm and drugs.
A search of the vehicle turned up a loaded Glock 19 9mm handgun with a 17-round magazine, marijuana, a nearly full bottle of codeine-based cough syrup, drug paraphernalia, and $985 in cash. Fapohunda, who was previously convicted of robbery in Arlington County, Virginia, and sentenced to five years incarceration, with four years suspended, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon.
The investigation was conducted by the Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Washington Field Office. Fapohunda is scheduled to be sentenced on December 3, 2026, before Judge Trevor N. McFadden.
The case was prosecuted under the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful initiative by Assistant U.S. Attorney David Liss. The guilty plea is a result of the ongoing efforts to reduce crime and improve public safety in DC.
