Caleb Lee Kinsey, a 37-year-old man from Savannah, Georgia, was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm in Louisiana. The conviction stems from a January 2023 house explosion in Bryan County, Georgia, where Kinsey is suspected of being involved. On January 19, 2023, Kinsey approached a police officer in Pollock, Louisiana, and asked about a warrant for his arrest, which led to the discovery of a loaded firearm in his vehicle.
According to evidence presented in court, Kinsey had a prior felony conviction in another state, making it illegal for him to possess firearms. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) recovered the loaded weapon pursuant to a state search warrant. Kinsey is currently under federal indictment in the Southern District of Georgia for alleged crimes committed there.
The trial, which lasted two days, ended with Kinsey’s conviction on July 28, 2026. He faces a sentence of up to 15 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. The case was investigated by the ATF and coordinated with law enforcement in Louisiana and Georgia.
The prosecution was part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating transnational criminal organizations and protecting communities. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Robert Moody and William Gaskins prosecuted the case with assistance from Legal Assistants Emily Favrot, Stephanie Stewart, and Amanda Morgan.
