Felon Caught with Firearm Faces 5 Years in Prison
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Convicted felon Jonathan Reyes, 35, of Pawtucket, is facing five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
According to court documents, Reyes was pulled over by Pawtucket Police on October 14, 2020, for not wearing a seatbelt and driving a vehicle that had not been properly registered. Reyes claimed to police that he had just purchased the vehicle, but a search of the vehicle revealed a loaded Sig Sauer semi-automatic handgun with an obliterated serial number inside a black satchel.
Reyes was previously convicted on felony drug trafficking and misdemeanor domestic assault charges. He attempted to flee police but was quickly apprehended.
Reyes pleaded guilty to the charge in U.S. District Court before Judge William E. Smith. Under the plea agreement, Reyes is recommended to serve a 60-month term of incarceration in federal prison if accepted by the court.
The matter was investigated by the Pawtucket Police Department with the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Ly T. Chin and William J. Ferland.
Reyes is currently detained in federal custody and is scheduled to be sentenced on August 20, 2021.
Federal authorities are cracking down on felons with guns, and this case is a prime example of the severe consequences that can result from such actions.
