A 28-year-old Hamilton man is facing up to 15 years in prison for possessing a collection of illegal firearms and ammunition. Shawn Ryan Cowan was found guilty by a federal jury after a one-day trial in Missoula.
Cowan, who has a history of violent crime, was previously convicted of Aggravated Assault in Montana and was required to register as a violent offender for life. He claimed his previous conviction was fraudulently obtained, but that didn’t stop him from amassing a stash of guns.
Law enforcement executed a search warrant at Cowan’s residence and found 11 firearms, including pistols, rifles, and shotguns, as well as various calibers of ammunition. Cowan admitted to police that he was a ‘technically a felon,’ but saw no problem owning guns.
U.S. Attorney Tim Racicot announced the guilty verdict, which carries a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release. Sentencing is set for August 26, 2026.
