A 49-year-old Billings man is behind bars for sickening sex abuse on the Crow Indian Reservation. Matthew Stopsatprettyplaces, 49, was convicted of abusing a 9-year-old girl in 2019.
According to court documents, Stopsatprettyplaces gave the young victim a ride to a family member’s residence in Hardin but instead of dropping her off, he assaulted her while she was asleep. The abuse continued on a subsequent occasion at her house in Hardin when Stopsatprettyplaces fondled her over her clothes and kissed her all over.
The girl eventually disclosed the abuse to a therapist, who reported it to the authorities, triggering an FBI investigation. Stopsatprettyplaces was sentenced to 5 years in prison and 10 years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Susan P. Watters.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kelsey Hendricks and Paul Vestal prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the FBI.
Justice was finally served for the young victim of this heinous crime, but the community is still reeling from the devastating effects of child abuse.
