Felon Caught with Loaded Gun

A 34-year-old man from Brownsville has been found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to federal authorities.

Contrell Leo Floyd, also known as ‘Kevin Wells,’ was convicted by a jury in a two-day trial before U.S. District Judge Federico A. Moreno.

The incident occurred in the early afternoon of October 20, 2014, when two Robbery Intervention Detail MDPD Detectives spotted Floyd in front of Brownsville Middle School. As the detectives approached him to ask questions, Floyd quickly stopped, turned towards the car, and pulled up his shirt to reveal a handgun tucked into his waistband.

One of the detectives drew his weapon and announced, ‘police!’ Floyd then fled and discarded the loaded handgun into a public park in front of the school. The police officers chased after him and apprehended Floyd, recovering the firearm.

Floyd had a prior conviction for state felony crimes, including armed robbery with a firearm. He is set to be sentenced on May 11, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. and faces a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison as an armed career criminal.

U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Wifredo A. Ferrer, commended the investigative efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Miami-Dade Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy Abraham and Vanessa Snyder.
