A convicted felon from Bayou La Batre, Alabama has been sentenced to prison for being in possession of stolen firearms. George Edward Wilkinson, Jr., 25, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for the crime.
According to court documents, Wilkinson was stopped by police in October 2016 after being suspected of stealing a car. When he was found, he had a semiautomatic pistol in his hand that was later determined to be stolen. Further investigation led to the discovery of a second stolen pistol in a nearby motel room.
Wilkinson confessed to stealing both pistols, which were later identified as belonging to the person from whom the car was stolen. The case was investigated by the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Wilkinson has a prior conviction for burglary, a felony offense, which made him ineligible to possess firearms. He pleaded guilty in February to possession of the stolen firearms and was sentenced by Senior United States District Judge Callie V.S. Granade to three years of supervised release after his prison sentence.
Wilkinson was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment as part of his sentence. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sean P. Costello. This is a reminder of the importance of ensuring that convicted felons do not possess firearms.
The case serves as a warning to those who think they can break the law and get away with it. The authorities will continue to investigate and prosecute those who engage in such activities.
This case is a result of the collaborative efforts of the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. We commend their efforts in bringing Wilkinson to justice.
