⏱ 2 min read

Shahada Sutton, a convicted felon, stole a loaded Glock 19 handgun from another person in Las Vegas on August 21, 2025. The victim retrieved a second firearm and chased Sutton to an adjacent parking lot, where the two exchanged gunfire. Sutton then fled on foot, dumping his backpack containing the loaded Glock and a Kel Tec Sub2000 rifle in a public park restroom.

Sutton, who was on parole at the time, had previously been convicted of felonies including carrying a concealed firearm and discharging a firearm at an occupied structure. He pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

The government recommended a sentence of 71 months’ imprisonment, but United States District Judge Jennifer A. Dorsey sentenced Sutton to two years and six months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Courtney Strange.
