Wendell Rashaud McKinney, a 38-year-old Beaumont man, was sentenced to 42 months in federal prison for possessing an AK-style pistol, a crime that unfolded on February 22, 2025, at the Fuma Dubai Hookah Lounge on Dowlen Road. McKinney, a previously convicted felon, was prohibited by federal law from owning or possessing firearms due to a prior felony drug offense in Jefferson County. When Beaumont police responded to a 911 call about multiple armed men, they found McKinney with the gun. The incident led to his guilty plea and subsequent sentencing by U.S. District Judge Marcia Crone on May 12, 2026.
The case was part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating violent crime and protecting communities from perpetrators. The investigation was led by the Beaumont Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, with prosecution handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney John B. Ross.
The sentencing of McKinney marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to curb violent crime in Eastern Texas. By targeting individuals who illegally possess firearms, law enforcement agencies aim to reduce the risk of gun violence and create safer communities.
