Raul Gutierrez, 33, of Inver Grove Heights, participated in a violent civil disturbance in Minneapolis on January 14, 2026, where he and others broke into an FBI vehicle and stole a semiautomatic rifle and a silencer. Gutierrez, a convicted felon, was barred from possessing firearms due to his prior convictions for burglary and domestic assault-strangulation. He was sentenced to 54 months in prison for being a felon in possession of stolen firearms. The sentencing reflects the commitment of law enforcement to taking dangerous individuals off the streets and protecting public safety.
According to court documents, Gutierrez’s accomplice broke into a vault in the cargo area of the FBI vehicle and removed a rifle bag and a satchel of ammunition. The accomplice gave the bag to Gutierrez, who took it to his car and drove away, later abandoning the firearms. The accomplice then took the firearms to his home.
The sentencing was the result of a collaboration between the US Attorney’s office and the FBI Minneapolis Field Office. US Attorney Daniel N. Rosen stated that the sentencing reflects his office’s commitment to taking dangerous individuals off the streets and protecting the people of Minnesota. FBI Minneapolis Field Office Special Agent in Charge Christopher D. Dotson emphasized that violence, theft, and damage to public property have no place in lawful protests.
Gutierrez was sentenced to 54 months in prison by U.S. District Judge John R. Tunheim on July 27, 2026. The sentencing sends a strong message that possessing stolen firearms, especially for individuals with a history of violent crime, will not be tolerated.
