Felon Gets 78 Months for Grow House, Guns
OAKLAND, Calif. – Vincent Nguyen, a 21-year-old Oakland man, has been sentenced to 78 months in prison for his role in operating a marijuana grow house in San Leandro and possessing firearms.
Nguyen was arrested on January 10, 2012, after a tip from concerned citizens led to an investigation by the San Leandro Police Department. He pleaded guilty on October 31, 2012, to conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute marijuana, possessing with the intent to distribute marijuana, and being a felon in possession of firearms.
According to his plea agreement, Nguyen admitted to operating a marijuana grow house at 3471 Carrillo Drive in San Leandro from August 2011 through January 2012. The operation yielded 82 mature marijuana plants, nearly one kilogram of packaged marijuana, and a stash of firearms.
The guns found at the scene included a Norinco US 7.62 caliber rifle with a high capacity magazine, a Romak-Romarm 7.62 caliber assault rifle that had been stolen, and a .45 caliber Smith & Wesson semiautomatic pistol. Additionally, about $10,000 in cash, a 9mm Bryco Arms semiautomatic pistol, and more than 100 rounds of various caliber ammunition were seized by law enforcement.
This is not Nguyen’s first brush with the law. He had previously been convicted in 2010 for felony possession of marijuana for sale. U.S. District Court Judge Phyllis J. Hamilton handed down the sentence, which also includes three years of supervised release.
Coincidentally, Nguyen’s co-defendants, Van Do Nguyen and Loc Huynh, were sentenced to 72 months and 87 months in prison, respectively, on January 23, 2013. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian C. Lewis and Janice Pagsanjan assisted in the prosecution, which was the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
