Columbia, South Carolina – A repeat offender is facing serious gun charges after pleading guilty to Felon in Possession of a Firearm in federal court.

Richard Stewart, 42, of Lancaster, SC, admitted to owning a Taurus Judge handgun found during a search warrant at his mother’s residence in 2017. The search, conducted by the Lancaster Sheriff’s Office, revealed multiple firearms, including the handgun Stewart admitted to owning.

Stewart’s plea comes after it was established that he is prohibited from possessing firearms due to his prior felony convictions for possession of crack cocaine and manufacturing crack cocaine.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Stewart faces a maximum possible penalty of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, and was prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state and local Project CeaseFire initiative.

Assistant United States Attorney Will Lewis handled the case, which is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer.

U.S. Attorney Sherri A. Lydon praised the efforts of law enforcement agencies in bringing Stewart to justice, saying the case is a prime example of the success of Project CeaseFire and PSN.

The sentence will be imposed by Senior District Judge Cameron Currie after reviewing the presentence report prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.
