Felon Sentenced for Firearm Offense

A Washington Park man has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for unlawful possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon. Terrell A. Rey, 28, of Washington Park, Illinois, was ordered to serve 30 months behind bars, followed by three years of supervised release, a $100 special assessment, and a $250 fine.

The case against Rey began on October 28, 2012, when police officers responded to his home. Upon arrival, the officers announced themselves and encountered Rey just inside the front door of the residence. It was then that they observed a firearm in his back pants pocket.

Rey was taken into police custody, interviewed, and read his Miranda rights. He subsequently admitted to possessing the firearm, despite knowing he was a previously convicted felon. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Washington Park Police Department investigated the case.

Special Assistant United States Attorney Neal C. Hong prosecuted the case on behalf of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton.

The 30-month prison sentence is a result of Rey’s admission to possessing a firearm, despite being a convicted felon. This sentence serves as a reminder of the severe consequences that come with breaking the law.

The case highlights the importance of community policing and the role that law enforcement plays in keeping our communities safe. The Washington Park Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are to be commended for their efforts in bringing this case to justice.
