Felon Sentenced to 9 Years for Gun Threats

An Elyria man has been sentenced to 110 months in prison for violating federal firearms laws after threatening his girlfriend with a gun and knife.

Steve Hamilton, 24, was sentenced for being a felon in possession of a firearm, specifically a Heritage MFG ‘Rough Rider’ .22 Caliber revolver, according to Acting U.S. States Attorney Carole S. Rendon and Elyria Police Chief Duane Whitely.

Hamilton had multiple felony convictions, which prohibited him from possessing firearms and ammunition. He used the gun and knife to threaten his girlfriend in Elyria, and when police arrived, he did not comply with their commands. The gun and knife were found concealed on him.

Hamilton made threatening statements to police, saying he ‘should have shot it out with you guys’ and ‘choked out the police officers and identified myself as a Heartless Felon and should have shot it out with the officers.’ He also threatened to shoot a police officer in the head when he got out of prison.

This prosecution is part of a coordinated effort between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and local Lorain County law enforcement to hold accountable violent felons who possess firearms.
