Fentanyl Dealer Gets 21 Months
ALBANY, NEW YORK – In a major blow to the city’s illicit opioid trade, a Schenectady man has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for possessing and intending to sell less than 2 grams of furanyl fentanyl.
Anthony M. DeRose, 24, a/k/a Gus, was handed down the sentence by United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino. However, DeRose will not serve the full 21 months immediately. Instead, he will first finish a term of imprisonment he is currently serving for a state attempted assault conviction.
According to court documents, DeRose was arrested on August 21, 2017, by Schenectady County Sheriff’s Deputies who were acting on an outstanding warrant. During the search, they found a clear plastic bag containing 145 smaller white bags or envelopes, each of which contained furanyl fentanyl, inside DeRose’s right pants pocket.
As part of his guilty plea, DeRose admitted that he intended to distribute the furanyl fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that has been a Schedule I controlled substance since November 29, 2016.
This case was investigated by the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Barnett.
DeRose will also face a 3-year term of supervised release once he is released from prison. The harsh sentence serves as a warning to those involved in the illicit opioid trade.
