A 44-year-old Sioux Falls man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his role in a fentanyl overdose that left a young woman fighting for her life. Jason Winckler, a convicted fentanyl dealer, was handed down the harsh sentence by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on May 6, 2024.
According to court documents, Winckler distributed a pill containing fentanyl to one of his customers on March 17, 2022. The customer’s girlfriend ingested the pill and suffered a severe overdose, leaving her unconscious and not breathing. Fortunately, responding officers were able to revive the victim after administering three doses of Narcan.
The case against Winckler was investigated by the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizbeth Ebert prosecuted the case, which was initially indicted by a federal grand jury in September of 2022.
Winckler pleaded guilty to the charges on February 21, 2024, and was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. He will also serve three years of supervised release upon his release from prison. In addition to the lengthy prison sentence, Winckler was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Winckler’s immediate remand to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service marked the end of a long and grueling process for the victim and her family.
