A 30-year-old Phoenix man, Carlos Zamora, was sentenced to 35 years in prison for his role in a transnational fentanyl trafficking organization that distributed millions of fentanyl pills across the US, including in western Pennsylvania, from August 2021 to June 2023. Zamora served as an enforcer for the Monarrez Drug Trafficking Organization, which also dealt in methamphetamine and cocaine. The organization’s operations were disrupted by a Homeland Security Task Force prosecution. Zamora was among 35 individuals charged in the case, and his sentencing is the latest development in the ongoing crackdown on the organization.
Zamora’s involvement in the organization was significant, with evidence presented during his trial establishing that he had obtained hundreds of thousands of fentanyl pills and kilograms of fentanyl powder for redistribution. The trial also included testimony about the execution of a search warrant on January 11, 2023, which resulted in the seizure of additional evidence.
The sentencing of Zamora and another defendant, Bryce Hill of Seattle, who received the same 35-year sentence in February 2026, marks a major blow to the Monarrez organization. The case was prosecuted by the US Attorney’s office, with United States District Judge J. Nicholas Ranjan imposing the sentence on Zamora.
The Monarrez organization’s reach was vast, with subordinate dealers redistributing the narcotics throughout the country. The organization’s activities were monitored through a federal wiretap, which intercepted Zamora’s communications as he obtained large quantities of fentanyl for redistribution.
