Fentanyl Kingpin Sentenced to Face Music
An Akron man is facing the music for his alleged role in a fatal fentanyl overdose, federal authorities announced.
Steven D. Daniels, 31, was indicted in federal court on one count each of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and distribution of fentanyl. The latter charge carries a sentencing enhancement because Daniels allegedly sold fentanyl that caused the fatal overdose of a person identified in the indictment as T.B.
According to the indictment, the fatal overdose took place on April 2 in Akron. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Henry F. DeBaggis following an investigation by the Akron Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration.
The alleged fentanyl kingpin’s sentence will be determined by the court after a review of the federal sentencing guidelines and factors unique to the case, including his prior criminal record, his role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation.
While an indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt, the allegations against Daniels are serious and warrant a closer look at the dark world of fentanyl trafficking.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
