ST. PAUL, Minn. – In a grim twist of criminal ingenuity, Robiel Lee Williams has been sentenced to 120 months’ imprisonment and five years’ supervised release for his role in a chilling fentanyl distribution conspiracy involving the use of children’s toys as drug carriers.
“Drug dealers are endlessly creative in finding new ways to smuggle their deadly poison into Minnesota,” Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson said, voicing a sentiment of horror and disbelief at the methods employed by Williams and his co-conspirators.
Williams, 25, along with an unspecified number of accomplices, operated between August 2022 and December 2023, conspiring to distribute fentanyl in the Twin Cities and beyond. Their modus operandi involved traveling to Phoenix to acquire fentanyl pills, which they then concealed inside stuffed animals before mailing them to addresses across the Twin Cities area.
A joint investigation by law enforcement agencies from Dakota, Ramsey, and Washington counties turned up six packages containing more than 30,000 grams of fentanyl pills. fingerprints belonging to Williams and several co-defendants were found on these packages, according to court documents.
The sentencing took place on June 30, 2025, in U.S. District Court before Judge Jeffrey M. Bryan, who imposed the heavy sentence. This case is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies including the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Homeland Security Investigation, the Dakota County Drug Task Force, the Washington County Drug Task Force, and the Ramsey County Violent Crime Enforcement Team.
