Trai Williams, Carfentanil Possession, Florida 2025

⏱ 2 min read

Trai Williams, a 28-year-old from Gainesville, Florida, pleaded guilty to possessing over 100 grams of carfentanil, a synthetic opioid 10,000 times more potent than morphine, with the intent to distribute. The plea came after a high-speed chase on October 2, 2025, where Williams fled from police, throwing cocaine and other controlled substances from his vehicle. The pursuit ended with Williams’ arrest and the execution of a search warrant at his apartment, uncovering a stash of controlled substances, including over 156 grams of carfentanil, and $55,000 in cash.

The investigation, part of the Department of Justice’s Operation Take Back America, highlights the growing threat of carfentanil in communities, with doses as small as 2 milligrams potentially fatal. Williams’ guilty plea ensures that nearly 80,000 lethal doses of the drug will not hit the streets, making the community safer.

Carfentanil, originally developed to tranquilize large animals like elephants, is 100 times stronger than fentanyl, according to the DEA. The agency estimates that it is 10,000 times more potent than morphine, making it an extremely dangerous substance.

Williams faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 10 years in prison, with a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The case demonstrates the DOJ’s commitment to eradicating drug trafficking and delivering safe, drug-free streets to citizens.
