Thomas Christopher Morton, 47, and Laurie Ann Chapman, 54, of Pensacola, Florida, were caught distributing more than 40 grams of fentanyl in a multi-month joint agency investigation that concluded on May 29, 2025. The probe, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, found the duo in possession of over 100 grams of fentanyl during a traffic stop. Morton and Chapman were sentenced to five years in federal prison for their role in peddling the deadly opioid.
The investigation revealed that Morton and Chapman were the primary targets, with law enforcement documenting multiple instances of fentanyl distribution. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Christopher C. Patterson, with U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin vowing to aggressively pursue those caught trafficking the ‘poison’.
DEA Special Agent in Charge Daniel Escobar emphasized that ‘every time our dedicated agents and law enforcement partners seize fentanyl, we save lives.’ The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative to combat the fentanyl epidemic.
The sentences handed down to Morton and Chapman serve as a warning to others involved in fentanyl trafficking. As U.S. Attorney Heekin noted, ‘President Donald J. Trump designated fentanyl as a ‘weapon of mass destruction’ because that’s exactly what it has been shown to be, leaving death and devastation in its wake.’
