Filiberto ‘Beto’ Chavez, 37, of Fresno, was sentenced to federal jury on Thursday for his role in a methamphetamine and sex trafficking operation. The jury found Chavez guilty on six counts, including conspiracy to distribute meth and use of interstate commerce to promote prostitution.
‘This verdict is a testament to the relentless efforts of law enforcement,’ said U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott. ‘Chavez and his gang are being held accountable for their despicable acts that terrorized our community.’
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer echoed the sentiment, adding, ‘Removing such ruthless gang members from society is a win for public safety. Chavez’s actions are a clear example of treating women as property through sex trafficking.’
The investigation led to the seizure of methamphetamine and the arrest of numerous accomplices. According to court documents, Chavez sold meth to Robert Lockhart in 2017, while Amina Padilla stored the drug for him and Carlos Melgar delivered it.
In addition, Chavez used Padilla to post prostitution ads online, orchestrating trips to New York with his prostitutes. Carlos Montano and Miguel Murillo were also charged in this operation.
Chavez faces life imprisonment and a $30,750,000 fine. Sentencing is set for August 5 before Chief U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. O’Neill.
