MONROE, N.C. – A brazen daytime carjacking and subsequent robbery landed Solamon Flores-Garcia, 43, a citizen of Mexico, a decade behind bars. Flores-Garcia was sentenced today to 10 years in federal prison for carjacking and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, according to U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson for the Western District of North Carolina.
The October 24, 2023 incident unfolded in Monroe, N.C. where Flores-Garcia, already illegally in the country after a prior deportation, targeted a neighbor. Court records detail a terrifying confrontation: Flores-Garcia allegedly approached the victim’s home and, upon answering the door, immediately brandished a red handgun, demanding both her wallet and car keys. The victim complied, handing over her vehicle to the armed assailant.
But the crime didn’t stop there. Flores-Garcia then drove the stolen car to La Chiquita Mexican store, escalating his rampage. Inside, he again displayed the red firearm – this time, pointing it directly at the head of the store clerk while robbing the establishment. He made off with an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing in the stolen vehicle, leaving a trail of fear and chaos in his wake.
Law enforcement acted swiftly. The FBI, working in conjunction with the Monroe Police Department and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), quickly apprehended Flores-Garcia. Special Agent in Charge James C. Barnacle, Jr. of the FBI in North Carolina, and Chief Rhett Bolen of the Monroe Police Department, joined Ferguson in announcing the sentencing, highlighting the collaborative effort that brought the perpetrator to justice.
Flores-Garcia, who had been held in custody since his arrest, now awaits transfer to a designated Federal Bureau of Prisons facility to begin serving his 10-year sentence.
