Daniel Keith McDougal, Counterfeit U.S. Treasury Check, Wyoming 2023

⏱ 2 min read

Daniel Keith McDougal, a 37-year-old from Florida, traveled to Wyoming in January 2023 to pull off a brazen scam. Along with accomplice Kennard Bouk, McDougal attempted to pass a counterfeit U.S. Treasury check valued at $560,625 at a bank in Cheyenne. The motives behind the scam are unclear, but the consequences for McDougal are now very real.

A federal jury convicted McDougal of passing a counterfeit U.S. Treasury check, bank fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud, and conspiracy to defraud the United States. The trial, which lasted five days, was held before U.S. District Judge Alan B. Johnson.

McDougal’s sentencing is scheduled for October 26, 2026. He faces a maximum of 30 years in prison, followed by at least three years of supervised release, a fine of up to $1.5 million, and restitution. The case was investigated by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration and the United States Secret Service, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Wyoming handling the prosecution.

The conviction sends a strong message to would-be scammers: federal law enforcement will track you down, no matter where you’re from or where you commit your crimes. As U.S. Attorney Smith noted, ‘We will not allow out-of-state fraudsters to target Wyoming financial institutions.’ McDougal’s case serves as a prime example of this commitment to justice.
