Florida Man Sentenced for Exporting Night Vision Goggles

Baltimore, Maryland – In a shocking case of international arms trafficking, Anthony J. Torresi, 34, of Coral Gables, Florida, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for unlawfully exporting night vision equipment.

On January 21, 2011, Torresi sold two night vision goggles for $7,039.99 to an undercover agent he believed to be located in New Zealand. However, the agent was actually from Baltimore. Torresi never applied for a license to export these items, which are designed to enable military ground troop personnel to conduct night operations.

On March 29, 2011, Torresi sold a 6015-4 night vision monocular to the undercover agent for $6,099.89. Torresi exported the monocular from Miami, Florida to New Zealand on April 29, 2011, but he misrepresented the item as a different night vision monocular that he had purchased for $266.

According to his plea agreement, Torresi listed night vision goggles and monoculars for sale on eBay. The items were subject to strict export controls under the Arms Export Control Act, and Torresi never applied for a license to export them.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised HSI Baltimore and the Counterproliferation Investigations Task Force for their work in the investigation. Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Welsh, who prosecuted the case.

ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) top enforcement priority is preventing U.S. military products and sensitive technology from falling into the hands of those who might seek to harm America or its interests.
