Florida Man Sold Night Vision Goggles on eBay
Anthony J. Torresi, a 34-year-old man from Coral Gables, Florida, has pleaded guilty to unlawfully exporting night vision equipment. The crime was committed through online auction site eBay.
Torresi sold night vision goggles and a night vision monocular to an undercover agent he believed was located in New Zealand, but was actually located in Baltimore. The sales took place on January 21, 2011 and March 29, 2011, for $7,039.99 and $6,099.89 respectively.
The items sold were designed to enable military ground troop personnel to conduct night operations, and Torresi never applied for a license to export them. A license from the U.S. Department of State is required to export such items, and selling them overseas without a license is a violation of the Arms Export Control Act.
On February 11, 2011, Torresi exported the goggles from Miami, Florida to New Zealand, and on April 29, 2011, he shipped a different night vision monocular that he had purchased for $266 and which did not require a license to export.
Torresi faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release and a $1 million fine for unlawful export of arms and munitions. U.S. District Judge Ellen L. Hollander scheduled sentencing for June 21, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised HSI Baltimore and the Counterproliferation Investigations Task Force for their work in the investigation. Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Welsh, who is prosecuting the case.
HSI Baltimore special agent in charge, William Winter, said, “One of ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations top enforcement priorities is preventing U.S. military products and sensitive technology from falling into the hands of those who might seek to harm America or its interests.”
