Ex-Mount Vernon Officer Pleads Guilty to Extortion
A former Mount Vernon Police officer has admitted to using his badge for personal gain. Matthew L. Dailey, age 45, of Howard, Ohio, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to Hobbs Act extortion under color of official right.
Dailey, who was a Detective Sergeant with the Mount Vernon Police, was accused of asking an informant to sell drugs for him and splitting the profits. A portion of the drugs were supplied from the Police Department’s property room, of which Dailey was the Evidence Custodian.
Dailey was placed on administrative leave in September 2015, after an investigation was launched. An inventory of the property room later revealed a missing kit used to teach drug awareness, containing crack and powder cocaine and ecstasy pills.
Dailey pleaded guilty on December 21, 2015, and agreed to pay restitution to the Mount Vernon Police Department, forfeit weapons, and a ban on future employment in any law enforcement capacity. He faces up to 20 years in prison for the crime.
The cooperative investigation was led by the FBI, DEA, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), and Mount Vernon Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Jessica H. Kim and Douglas W. Squires are representing the United States in this case.
Dailey’s actions are a stark reminder of the corrupting influence of power and the need for accountability within law enforcement agencies.
U.S. Attorney Carter M. Stewart commended the investigators for their tireless efforts in bringing Dailey to justice. ‘This case highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public in rooting out corruption,’ Stewart said.
