Marlon Taylor, a former corrections officer at the Lorain County Jail, has pleaded guilty to one count of deprivation of rights under color of law, according to officials from the Department of Justice and the FBI. The 47-year-old Vermilion resident faced charges for assaulting an inmate by striking him repeatedly on July 29, 2012.
Court documents describe the attack as causing bodily injury to the inmate, violating his right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment. United States Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach emphasized that while the majority of law enforcement officials do great work, those who abuse their power will face accountability.
Acting Assistant Attorney General Jocelyn Samuels highlighted the Civil Rights Division’s commitment to identifying and prosecuting instances of law enforcement abuse. Stephen D. Anthony, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Cleveland Office, reminded the public that the vast majority of officers serve with honor but that any allegations of abuse are taken seriously.
Taylor is scheduled for sentencing on December 19th. The investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Cleveland Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Antoinette T. Bacon and Lauren Bell, and Trial Attorney Betsy Biffl handling the prosecution.
