Henry Underwood, Firearms Violation, Indiana 2024

FORT WAYNE – Henry Underwood, a 29-year-old from Fort Wayne, Indiana, faced the music this week after being sentenced to 102 months in federal prison for his role in a firearms violation. United States District Court Judge Holly A. Brady handed down the stiff sentence, announced United States Attorney Clifford D. Johnson.

Underwood’s sentence includes three years of supervised release following his prison term. The charges stem from an incident in September 2022 when Underwood was found guilty after a trial that lasted three days.

The crime that landed Underwood behind bars began in December 2019, when the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a vandalism-by-gunfire complaint. Police soon tracked down Underwood and found him inside a vehicle containing a loaded 9mm pistol and an extended magazine. Surveillance footage from a social media video posted earlier in the day tied Underwood to the weapon and the incident.

Underwood’s illegal possession of the firearm was all the more egregious considering his multiple prior felony convictions, which prohibit him from owning or possessing firearms. His latest offense is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across the country.

The investigation into Underwood’s crime was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with assistance from the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Indiana State Police laboratory. Assistant United States Attorneys Stacey R. Speith and Anthony W. Geller prosecuted the case.

Project Safe Neighborhoods is a nationwide initiative that brings together all levels of law enforcement to address violent crime in our neighborhoods. Its four core principles include fostering community trust, supporting organizations that prevent violence, strategic law enforcement priorities, and measuring results to improve public safety.
