In a daring raid that left the notorious town of Hurley, Wisconsin reeling, federal prohibition agents swooped down on the ‘widest open town in the Iron Range’ on December 29, 1921. Led by Agent Frank Richards from Chicago, the team of armed agents from the office of Internal Revenue caught the town’s bootleggers completely off guard, netting $10,000 worth of moonshine and bonded liquor in the process. The raid was the culmination of a wild night in Hurley, where liquor was sold at bargain rates ranging from 35 cents for moonshine whisky to 73 cents for well-known brands.
