The sentence, handed down by Chief United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon on July 21, 2026, comes after Smith pleaded guilty to bank fraud and violating her supervised release. Smith’s crimes were committed while she was working as a comptroller for two separate companies, where she created unauthorized checks and misused company credit cards for personal gain.
According to court documents, Smith’s embezzlement schemes began while she was on supervised release for a prior wire fraud conviction. Despite her history of dishonesty, Smith was able to secure employment as a comptroller at a Pittsburgh engineering firm, where she quickly began to embezzle company funds.
