Elias Gallegos, Assault with Deadly Weapon, New Mexico 2022

ALBUQUERQUE – The United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, Alexander M.M. Uballez, has announced a severe sentence for Elias Gallegos, 27, of Albuquerque. Gallegos was convicted on October 25, 2022, by a federal jury for assaulting a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier with a deadly weapon.

Court documents reveal that the assault occurred on September 17, 2021, when Gallegos chased and threw a rock at a letter carrier who had brandished a knife during the incident near Constitution Avenue NE and Monroe St. NE in Albuquerque.

The letter carrier retreated to his mail truck, reported the attack, and called for police. Gallegos fled, jumping several fences before being contained by officers in a shed on Manzano Street. Found within were the torch lighter and pocketknife used in the crime.

United States Attorney Uballez emphasized the bravery of postal workers, stating, “When streets level senseless threats, the United States will protect federal employees.” Inspector Melisa Llosa echoed this sentiment, highlighting the commitment to justice by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and law enforcement partners.

Gallegos faces supervised release for three years upon his release from prison. The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Albuquerque Police Department, prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Samuel A. Hurtado and Patrick Cordova.

“Today’s sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who threaten our postal workers,” concluded Uballez.
