Child Predator Sentenced to 17 Years

A Gates man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for transporting a minor for sexual acts, a federal crime that has left a community shaken.

U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced that Michael J. Rolfe, 48, of Gates, N.Y., was sentenced to 17 years in prison and 20 years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr.

The defendant, a long-distance truck driver, took a child who was less than 12 years old on a trip from Rochester, N.Y. to locations in Texas in August 2012. Over the course of the trip, Rolfe engaged in sexual acts with the child on more than one occasion while traveling outside of New York.

This heinous crime is a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk in our community. As a society, we must remain vigilant in protecting our children from predators like Rolfe.

Rolfe’s history of child exploitation predates his latest conviction. In 2002, he was previously convicted on federal charges of possessing child pornography while serving in the U.S. Navy.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.

The sentencing is the culmination of an investigation on the part of Special Agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent In Charge James C. Spero, along with Investigators from the New York State Police, under the direction of Superintendent Joseph D’Amico.
