In a stunning turn of events, David Miller, the owner and operator of Gilmore City’s Miller Tax Services, was sentenced to more than a year in federal prison for his brazen scheme that defrauded both the American taxpayers and his clients out of over $125,000.
The 52-year-old pleaded guilty to three counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation and presentation of false and fraudulent income tax returns, as well as three counts of receiving stolen government money or property. Miller’s deceitful practices spanned from 2011 to 2016, with his schemes directly leading to a staggering $125,954 loss for the government.
Miller didn’t stop there. He also stole from his clients by appropriating their tax refunds and failed to report this theft as income, owing himself an additional $30,752 in taxes. The total restitution ordered to be paid back to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is a staggering $156,706.
United States Attorney Peter E. Deegan, Jr., had harsh words for Miller’s actions: ‘Miller abused his position as a tax preparer to steal from both the American taxpayer and Miller’s own clients.’ Deegan also commended the IRS for their diligent work in safeguarding the integrity of the tax system.
Acting Special Agent in Charge Adam Steiner echoed Deegan’s sentiments, urging taxpayers to be cautious in selecting their tax professionals. Miller was sentenced to 12 months and 1 day in federal prison by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand. He will also serve a 2-year term of supervised release following his prison term.
This case, prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ron Timmons and investigated by the Department of Treasury and the IRS, serves as a stark reminder that those who attempt to defraud America’s tax system will face serious consequences.
