Glenburn Man Sentenced for Stealing VA Shipment
Bangor, ME – 38-year-old Chad Bitgood, a former delivery truck driver for United Parcel Service (UPS), has been sentenced to two years of probation for stealing a package belonging to the Veterans Administration (VA) that he believed contained narcotic medications.
According to court records, on April 27, 2015, Bitgood stole the package while working as a delivery truck driver, with the intention of consuming the narcotics inside. The package was being monitored by VA investigators.
When confronted by investigators, Bitgood admitted to stealing the package and was subsequently arrested and charged with theft of government property and attempted possession of a controlled substance.
On January 26, 2016, Bitgood pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced by Magistrate Judge John C. Nivison to two years of probation and ordered to pay a fine of $1000.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Veterans Administration, Office of the Inspector General.
Assistant United States Attorney Chris Ruge represented the government in this case.
Bitgood’s sentencing is a reminder of the importance of holding public officials and employees accountable for their actions.
