Shyheem Jaqun DuPont, a 24-year-old Charlotte man, was sentenced to 30 months in prison for possessing a firearm fitted with a machinegun conversion device, known as a Glock switch, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred on February 21, 2024, when DuPont’s vehicle was stopped by Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers in a parking lot. DuPont, who had multiple outstanding felony arrest warrants, reversed his car into a marked police vehicle, striking it, and then drove forward before reversing again and striking the vehicle a second time.
As officers approached DuPont’s vehicle, they observed a firearm on his lap, which was later found to be a black Glock, Model 19, 9mm semiautomatic firearm, with a 31-round capacity magazine and a Glock switch. Further investigation revealed additional firearms, including a black Glock, Model 20, 10mm semiautomatic firearm, a black Springfield, Model XD-M, 10mm semi-automatic firearm, and a Del-Ton Model DTI 15, 5.56mm semiautomatic pistol, as well as marijuana and a digital scale.
DuPont pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with a machinegun conversion device on April 11, 2025. He was ordered to serve 30 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The sentencing is part of a broader effort by law enforcement to crack down on the use of Glock switches, which can turn a regular gun into a machine gun, posing a significant threat to public safety.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Charlotte Field Division, and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson and Special Agent in Charge Alicia Jones of the ATF Charlotte Field Division joined Chief Estella D. Patterson of the CMPD in announcing the sentencing.
