A convicted felon fired multiple rounds into an occupied Charlotte apartment, putting a family with a young child at risk. Robert Dale Emerson Jr., 37, was sentenced to 105 months in prison for possessing a firearm as a felon.
The shooting occurred on June 22, 2023, at an apartment complex in Charlotte. Emerson fired between five and six rounds from his vehicle, narrowly missing a family with a child as young as a year old.
A shell casing was recovered by CMPD officers on the scene. Emerson pleaded guilty to the charge in June 2025 and was sentenced by a federal judge.
U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson called Emerson’s actions ‘thoughtless’ and ‘reckless’, saying he put innocent lives at risk. The sentence sends a message that those who terrorize innocent people will face federal charges and severe consequences.
