A drug dealer’s deadly transaction ended in tragedy when a man in Franklin County, North Carolina, overdosed and died from fentanyl sold to him by Cordell Antonio Mendoza. On February 17, 2026, Mendoza pleaded guilty to conspiracy to sell and possess with the intent to sell heroin and fentanyl, and selling of fentanyl resulting in death. The fatal overdose occurred in October 2024, when the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office found the victim dead at his home with fentanyl in his pocket and empty bindles in the trash.
Mendoza’s guilty plea came after a thorough investigation by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations, which revealed that he had sold the deadly fentanyl to the victim just over an hour before the victim was found dead. In a recorded telephone call two days later, Mendoza callously discussed the victim’s overdose and death, before stating his intention to continue selling drugs.
A search of Mendoza’s house in November 2024 uncovered 102 bindles of a fentanyl and heroin mixture, further solidifying the case against him. U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle condemned Mendoza’s actions, stating that selling poison that kills people goes far beyond run-of-the-mill drug dealing, and that the defendant had accepted death as the cost of doing business.
Mendoza’s sentence of 21 years in federal prison reflects the severity of his crimes and the devastating impact of fentanyl on communities. The case highlights the relentless efforts of federal and local law enforcement to deliver justice when drug trafficking leads to tragic loss of life.
