Gonzalez Pleas Guilty to Illegal Reentry

David Gonzalez, a 24-year-old Honduran national, pleaded guilty in federal court today to a one-count indictment charging him with illegal reentry of a removed alien.

According to court documents, Gonzalez admitted to being an alien who had previously been removed from the United States. He was found in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana on January 24, 2013, without having obtained consent from the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to reapply for admission to the United States.

The indictment charging Gonzalez with illegal reentry also included a notice of sentencing enhancement based on his prior aggravated felony conviction. With the enhancement, the charge carries a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years imprisonment, a fine of $250,000, and 3 years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.

Sentencing for the defendant is scheduled for July 2, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement with the assistance of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The prosecution is being handled by Special Assistant United States Attorney Robert Weir. U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente announced the guilty plea.

Gonzalez’s guilty plea marks the latest development in a case that highlights the importance of enforcing immigration laws and protecting national security.
