A Burlington man has been sentenced to 242 months in prison for distributing methamphetamine in the Quad Cities area.
On April 4, 2017, Gregory Louis Baxter, Jr., 34, possessed 312 grams of actual ‘ice’ methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, according to court documents. He admitted to distributing ounces of methamphetamine to another on that date.
Baxter also admitted to attempting to flee from law enforcement agents in a vehicle and attempting to destroy evidence. He faced an enhanced statutory mandatory minimum sentence based on a 2014 state conviction for conspiracy to deliver marijuana.
The investigation into Baxter’s activities was a collaborative effort by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Southeast Iowa Narcotics Task Force, and the Burlington Police Department.
Baxter was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger on February 12, 2018. In addition to his prison term, he was ordered to serve ten years of supervised release and pay $100 to the Crime Victims’ Fund.
The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
Baxter’s guilty plea and subsequent sentencing mark a significant victory for law enforcement in the Quad Cities area, where methamphetamine distribution has been a growing concern in recent years.
