Jose Martinez-Lopez, Human Smuggling and Reentry, Massachusetts 2024

BOSTON – A Guatemalan national, Jose Martinez-Lopez, alias ‘Amalio Mendez-Molina,’ 33, has been sentenced to time served after being caught with a forged immigration document and illegal reentry into the United States. The defendant’s previous record reads like a crime novel: he unlawfully entered the country four times, was convicted in Arizona of human smuggling, charged in Illinois with domestic battery/bodily harm, and twice faced assault charges against police officers in Massachusetts.

Martinez-Lopez was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni to 163 days in prison, the time he had already served before his plea deal. His current status is one of pending deportation.

The defendant’s illegal activities began in June 2009 when he was removed from the United States and sent back to Guatemala after entering the country illegally. He returned against the law multiple times, culminating in a guilty verdict for human smuggling conspiracy in 2011, followed by another deportation.

In February 2025, Martinez-Lopez was once again taken into custody, this time in West Springfield, Mass., for assault and battery on a police officer. During his arrest, he possessed a forged permanent resident card under the alias ‘Amalio Mendez-Molina.’ He confessed to being present in the U.S. unlawfully and re-entered the country in 2021.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston announced the sentencing, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven H. Breslow from the Springfield Branch Office.
