BUFFALO, N.Y. – The grim streets of Buffalo were once again the backdrop for justice as Mario Salguero Sandoval, 36, a citizen and national of Guatemala, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge John L. Sinatra, Jr., to the heinous charge of illegal re-entry into the United States.
Sandoval’s transgression was not a mere slip-up; it was a brazen defiance of the nation’s immigration laws. In June 2015, Sandoval had been ordered removed from the United States due to his undocumented status. Yet, he returned, leaving behind any documents that might have allowed him legal presence on American soil.
The U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced today that Sandoval was caught red-handed by Border Patrol agents in Erie County, NY, on June 10, 2025. This time, there were no get-out-of-jail-free cards; he faced the music for his actions.
Handling the case with precision was Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Smith, whose relentless pursuit of justice led to Sandoval’s conviction. The guilty plea and subsequent sentencing are a testament to the U.S. Border Patrol’s unwavering commitment to uphold the nation’s borders.
Patrol Agent in Charge Martin B. Coombs oversaw this investigation with steely determination. It was under his direction that the evidence against Sandoval mounted, leading to the guilty plea and the sentence of two months in prison that awaits him.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the perils that illegal re-entry into the United States poses to both national security and public safety. As Sandoval’s sentence is carried out, it sends a message: the rule of law will be enforced without mercy for those who challenge it.
